Ayurveda for Osteoarthritis
Osteoarthritis is referred to as degenerative arthritis or degenerative joint disease, known as Sandigata Vata in Ayurveda.
It is the most common type of Arthritis because it’s often caused by the wear and tear on a joint over a lifetime and causing pain, swelling and stiffness as bones rub together resulting in the process of gradual degeneration of the body. It is most often found in the hands, knees, hips and spine. The physical disability arising from pain and loss of functional capacity reduces quality of life and rises in further morbidity.
Osteoarthritis (OA) is the second most common rheumatologic problem and it is the most frequent joint disease with a prevalence of 22% to 39% in India. OA is more common in women than men. Closely, 45% of women over the age of 65 years have symptoms while 70% of those over 65 years show radiological evidence of OA.
Factors that contribute to osteoarthritis include: Heredity, sedentary lifestyle, obesity, joint overuse and injury. Patients who already have rheumatoid arthritis are more likely to develop osteoarthritis.
Symptoms of Osteoarthritis
Some of the symptoms of osteoarthritis overlap with Rheumatoid arthritis, so it is important to schedule a consultation with a qualified physician who can diagnose your condition correctly.
Common symptoms of osteoarthritis include:
-
Pain: During joint movement.
-
Joint Stiffness and crepitation: Joint Stiffness after a period of not moving, such as in the morning or after sitting for a long time followed by crepitus that is specific crackling and creaking sound during joint movement along with pain
-
Muscle weakness: Surrounding to the arthritic joint, exclusively for arthritis in the knee
-
Swelling: They will feel tender and sore, when osteoarthritis causes swelling in joints.
-
Deformed joints: As rapid progress in osteoarthritis, joints may begin to look crooked or misshapen.
-
Reduced range of motion
Stages of Osteoarthritis
Stage 1 – Minor
Stage 1 Osteoarthritis patients will advance to very minor wear & tear and bone spur growths at the end of the knee joints. However, at this stage it is unlikely to feel pain or discomfort.
Stage 2 – Mild
In Stage 2, X-rays of knee joints will show more bone spur growth, though the gap between the bones appear normal, people will begin facing symptoms of joint pain. Normally, the area near to the knee joints will feel stiff and uncomfortable, particularly when sitting for long period, after rising in the morning or after a workout, even cartilage and soft tissues are in healthy condition.
Stage 3 – Moderate
Stage 3 is where there is obvious erosion to the cartilage surface between bones and fibrillation narrows the gap between the bones. Bones advances to develop spurs at the joints as it becomes rougher.
With the advancement of osteoarthritis of the knee there is obvious joint inflammation which causes frequent pain when walking, running, squatting, extending or kneeling. Along with joint stiffness after sitting for long or when waking up in the morning, there may be popping or snapping sounds when walking.
Stage 4 – Severe
During this stage the joint space between the bones are considerably reduced, causing the cartilage to wear off, leaving the joint stiff. The breakdown of cartilage destroys the soft tissue around the joint leads to a chronic inflammatory response, with decreased synovial fluid that causes friction, greater pain and discomfort when walking or moving the joint.
The progressive stage of the disease shows development of more spurs causing severe pain, which makes even everyday chores, including walking and descending stairs a challenge.

Balancing the Three Fundamental Doshas (Energies)of the Body in Ayurveda.
Ayurveda states that everyone and everything is composed of three basic types of energy—Vata, Pitta and Kapha—which have no exact English translations.
The origins of Panchakarma can be traced back to ancient India, where it was used as a preventative and curative measure for maintaining optimal health and wellness and one of the line of treatments that our Doctors at Indus Valley specialise in.
The practice is based on the principles of Ayurveda, which states that good health is achieved by maintaining a balance between the body, mind, and spirit. Panchakarma is believed to restore this balance by eliminating toxins and impurities from the body, allowing the body’s natural healing processes to take place.
Vata is responsible for movement, Pitta for digestion/metabolism and Kapha for lubrication and structure.
Though all three qualities are present in every person, one is almost always the primary characteristic, while the other two take secondary and tertiary roles, respectively.
Vata is one of the five basic elements, or “pancha mahabhuta”, in Ayurvedic medicine. It is responsible for all movement, including the movement of nerves, thoughts, and circulation, as well as physical movement. Vata energy is associated with Air and Space elements and is the force responsible for change and transformation, movement and flow. It is said to be the most powerful force out of the five elements and is the source of creativity, enthusiasm and inspiration.
Pitta is the energy of transformation— composed of Fire and Water. It governs metabolism, body temperature, digestion and absorption, nutrition, and skin complexion. In balance, Pitta inspires understanding, intelligence and contentment.
Kapha is the energy of structure and lubrication— composed of Earth and Water. It governs growth, providing the body’s structure and maintaining body resistance. In balance, Kapha brings stability and love.
Imbalances in Vata, Pitta, and Kapha can manifest as physical, psychological or spiritual disharmony. The underlying causes may include a poor diet, lifestyle, environment, and inherited tendencies. Restoring balance requires making changes to diet, lifestyle and consciousness. Ayurvedic treatments, such as herbal medicines, massage treatments and yoga, are geared toward restoring the balance of Vata, Pitta and Kapha.
Imbalance in Vata (Ether & Air) can cause stiff and painful joints, dry skin, restlessness, insomnia, and fatigue. It can manifest as fear and anxiety. Pitta, which is composed of Fire and Water, governs the body’s metabolic system, controlling digestion, absorption, assimilation, nutrition, metabolism, and body temperature. When in balance, Pitta brings about understanding and intelligence.
When out of balance, Pitta arouses anger, hatred, and jealousy, while Kapha, when out of balance, can lead to attachment, greed, and possessiveness. Kapha, formed of Earth and Water, is the energy that forms the body’s structure—bones, muscles, tendons—and provides the particles that hold the cells together, lubricates joints, moisturizes the skin, and maintains immunity. Kapha is expressed as love, calmness, and forgiveness when in balance.
Mindful Habits for Creating Balance In Your Life.
Vata, The Life Force of Motion Moving You Forward
Ayurveda is not just about physical and mental health; it’s also about establishing mindful habits for creating everlasting balance in your life. With Vata, the life force of motion, you can further empower yourself to be motivated and to move forward with purpose. Practising daily routines such as bundling up, staying relaxed, avoiding cold foods or temperatures, having hot meals and seasonings, and getting enough rest are just a few techniques to promote an Ayurvedic lifestyle. As you progress on your journey with Ayurveda, you will learn strategies and daily habits to create balanced well-being that will last long-term.
Pitta, The Catalyst for Digestive and Metabolic Processes
Unleashing the Benefits of Pitta: Optimizing Your Digestive and Metabolic Processes The ancient Ayurveda’s holistic approach to wellness is key to optimizing our digestive and metabolic processes. According to Ayurveda, the element of Pitta is the catalyst that helps maintain a healthy lifestyle. To help manage and balance Pitta, there are certain things you can do regularly.
First, it is important to avoid extreme temperatures. Your body requires a balanced temperature to function at its best. Too hot or cold will throw off your Pitta and affect your internal equilibrium.
Second, use oil sparingly. Too much oil can create an abundance of Pitta, leading to agitation and irritability. Limit your use of oil to promote a cool and calm internal environment.
Third, reduce the amount of salt in your diet. Too much salt further aggravates Pitta and disrupts energy flow within your body. Opt instead for unrefined sea salts or herbs such as turmeric, cumin, and ginger to add flavour.
Fourth, choose cooling foods to keep your system balanced. Including fruits, grains, and vegetables in your diet helps reduce body heat and maintain a regulated temperature.
Lastly, exercising during the cooler times of the day is also beneficial. The heat generated from strenuous activity can lead to Pitta imbalance – so be sure to keep your exercise routine away from peak hours to promote better balance. Following these guidelines, you can access Ayurveda’s power and unleash Pitta’s benefits for optimal digestive and metabolic processes.
Kapha, The Lubricating Force of Life on Earth
With Kapha, Ayurveda recommends varying your activities when it comes to exercise. Mixing things up prevents stagnation, keeps your body active and vital, and helps you maintain a healthy energy level throughout the day. Focus less on overly demanding activities and instead focus more on calming and energy-boosting activities.
In terms of diet, Ayurveda advises avoiding fatty, oily dishes and instead opting for light, dry food. Dairy products should also be avoided, and try to avoid cold food and beverages since they weaken one’s digestion. If possible, aim to stay active throughout the day, taking short breaks instead of having lengthy naps.

How to remain healthy with Ayurveda
Most effective and Ancient Ayurvedic Therapies
Panchakarma is a Sanskrit word that means “five actions” or “five treatments”. This is a process used to clean the body of toxic materials left by disease, poor nutrition and environmental toxins. Normally the body has the innate ability to efficiently process and remove these waste materials, including the vitiated doshas.
However, due to one’s repeated dietary indiscretions, poor exercise patterns, lifestyle, and genetic predisposition, the digestive enzymes, metabolic co-factors, hormones, and agnis which regulate the body’s internal homeostasis become disorganized. This can lead to the accumulation and spread of toxins throughout the physiology resulting in disease. This waste matter is called ama in Ayurveda. Ama is a foul-smelling, sticky, harmful substance that needs to be completely evacuated from the body.
